How to use

How to extract audio from a video

Turn a YouTube video into an MP3, M4A, OPUS, WAV or FLAC file in three steps. This page covers copying the link on any device, picking the right format, finding your download and fixing the most common problems.

The three steps

No app, no account and no browser extension. Everything happens in this browser tab.

  1. 1

    Copy the video link

Open the video on YouTube and copy its link. In the app, tap Share, then Copy link. In a browser, copy the address from the address bar. Single videos, Shorts, live replays and YouTube Music tracks all work.

  2. 2

Paste it and pick a format

Paste the link into the box, then choose MP3, M4A, OPUS, WAV or FLAC. For MP3 you can also pick 128, 192 or 320 kbps. 192 kbps is a good default.

  3. 3

    Convert and download

Press Convert. A status page shows the download and conversion progress, and a Download button appears when your file is ready. Save it right away: files are deleted after 30 minutes.

Open the converter

Konvert needs the address of one specific video. Here's the quickest way to get it on each kind of device.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. In the YouTube app: open the video, tap Share below the player, then tap Copy link.
  2. In Safari: open the video, tap the Share button and choose Copy. Or tap the address bar, tap the highlighted address again and choose Copy.
  3. Come back to Konvert, tap the link box and choose Paste.

On Android

  1. In the YouTube app: open the video, tap Share, then tap Copy link.
  2. In Chrome or another browser: tap the address bar and copy the full address, or use the browser's Share menu and choose Copy.
  3. Open Konvert, touch and hold the link box and tap Paste.

On a Mac, Windows or Linux computer

  1. Click the browser's address bar while the video is open and copy the address with Command+C on a Mac or Ctrl+C on Windows and Linux.
  2. Or click Share below the video and choose Copy. Right-clicking the YouTube player and choosing Copy video URL works too.
  3. Paste it into Konvert with Command+V or Ctrl+V.

Copy only the link. If you paste a whole message that also contains text (for example "Check this out: https://…"), the box won't accept it.

Choosing a format

If you're not sure, choose MP3 at 192 kbps. It plays on everything and sounds good for music and speech. The table explains when another format is a better fit.

Format What it is and when to use it
MP3
About 1–2.4 MB per minute
The universal choice. Encoded at a constant 128, 192 or 320 kbps, and plays on every phone, car stereo, laptop and smart speaker.
Best for: Music libraries, podcasts, sharing
M4A
About 1 MB per minute
AAC audio in an MP4 container, at about 128 kbps. It usually sounds a little better than MP3 at the same size and plays natively on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Best for: Apple devices and the Music app
OPUS
About 1 MB per minute
A modern, very efficient codec. YouTube usually delivers audio as Opus, so this option typically saves the original stream as-is, with no re-encoding. Some older players can't open it.
Best for: Keeping the source audio, speech, saving space
WAV
Lossless
About 10–12 MB per minute
Uncompressed 16-bit PCM audio at the source's sample rate. Large files, but every editor and DAW opens them instantly.
Best for: Video editing, DAWs, sampling
FLAC
Lossless
About 6–13 MB per minute
Lossless like WAV, in a format built for archiving that supports tags. It keeps the full precision of the decoded audio, so files are often about as large as WAV.
Best for: Archiving, lossless music players

No setting can make audio sound better than the original upload. Higher bitrates and lossless formats only avoid losing more. For the details, read MP3, M4A, OPUS, WAV and FLAC compared and the MP3 bitrate guide.

Where your file goes

When the conversion finishes, press Download. The file is named after the video's title and ends in the format you chose, for example .mp3. It's deleted from our server 30 minutes after you start, so save it right away.

iPhone and iPad

Safari saves downloads to the Downloads folder in the Files app, either in iCloud Drive or on your device, depending on your settings. While a file is saving, tap the downloads button in Safari's address bar to open it. From Files you can play it, share it, or move it into another app.

Android

Chrome and most other browsers save to the Downloads folder. Open your phone's Files app and choose Downloads, or open Downloads from Chrome's menu. Music apps that scan your phone's storage will usually find the file there too.

Mac, Windows and Linux

Your browser saves the file to its download folder, usually called Downloads. To see recent downloads, press Ctrl+J in most browsers on Windows and Linux, Option+Command+L in Safari, or Shift+Command+J in Chrome on a Mac.

Konvert converts one YouTube video per job. These links work:

  • youtube.com/watch?v=…: regular videos, including the mobile m.youtube.com version
  • youtu.be/…: short share links from the YouTube app
  • youtube.com/shorts/…: YouTube Shorts
  • youtube.com/live/…: live streams, once they've ended and a replay is available
  • music.youtube.com/watch?v=…: YouTube Music tracks

A video link that also contains &list= works too. Only that one video is converted.

These don't work:

  • Playlist links (youtube.com/playlist?list=…) and channel links (youtube.com/@name, /channel/…, /c/…, /user/…)
  • Embedded-player links (youtube.com/embed/…) and links from other sites
  • Private, members-only, age-restricted or sign-in-only videos
  • Removed videos, and videos that aren't available in our server's region
  • Videos longer than 1 hour

Facebook and TikTok support is in development. You can follow progress on the Facebook and TikTok pages.

If something goes wrong

When a conversion can't go ahead, Konvert shows a short message saying why. The most common ones:

"This URL isn't supported."
The link isn't a single YouTube video. Copy the link again from the video itself.
"This looks like a YouTube playlist link." or "…channel link."
Open one video from the playlist or channel and copy that link instead.
"This video is private." or "This video requires signing in to view."
The video isn't publicly viewable, so it can't be converted.
"This video is not available in the server's region."
The uploader has limited where the video can be watched, and our server is outside that area.
A message about the length limit
The video is longer than 1 hour. Look for a shorter upload or a clip of the part you need.
"Could not download or convert this video."
Something went wrong on the way. Wait a moment and try again.

If you've started 10 conversions in the past hour, you'll see a "too many requests" page. Each conversion stops counting an hour after you start it. For every message and what to try next, read why a conversion fails and how to fix it.

Tips for the best results

  • Paste the full link, starting with https://. The box won't accept an address without it.
  • Match the format to the job. MP3 at 128 kbps or OPUS for speech and lectures, MP3 at 192 or 320 kbps for music, and WAV for editing timelines.
  • Keep the status page open. It updates on its own. The progress bar fills once for the download and again for the conversion.
  • Download straight away. Files are deleted 30 minutes after you start the conversion.
  • Only convert what you're allowed to. Your own uploads, public-domain works, Creative Commons content that allows it, or content you have permission to use. Our copyright basics guide explains more.
